I was disabled by severe intrusive tinnitus in 1994-95-96.
Prior to that time I was a cancer surgeon - mostly breast and colon. My tinnitus was so severe and my disability so great that I spent most of my time lying in bed rolling from side-to-side holding my ears.
Obviously I had to discontinue working - I was totally disabled. Internet? Hell, I couldn't spend five minutes at a computer. On a real good day, I might be able to accompany my wife on a brief trip to the grocery store ... or on a super good day, I could drive car pool for my kids, although more than once my wife sat in the back seat
accompanying me on those trips to make sure I could get throught it.
My doctors - several of them including two neurotologists and an ENT - told me I had to live with it ... that nothing could be done.
More about my experience back then can be found at

My wife offered suggestions recently in an article called "Tinnitus Spouse Survival" in the December 2000 issue of Tinnitus Today.
Today I still have tinnitus. But I am whole. I work 40+ hours a week and still have time for volunteer activities and a happy family life.
There are effective treatments out there, folks. I found mine. You find yours. But don't you dare let any doctor tell you that nothing can be done.
