Earplugs?

Hi everyone!
I don't know if I have tinnitus, I have a ringing sound in my ears but it's not a problem in my daily life and I can fall asleep most of the time without trouble.I read somewere on this site that earplugs can cause more damage to your ears and increase your tinnitus. Is this true??? If I go out to a club and wear earplugs, can I still damage my ears?
Please answer my questions, I havn't been out for 5 months since I got "tinnitus" because I´m afraid to damage my hearing more.
