just wearing hearing protection can aggrivate tinnitus

This may sound crazy, but just wearing hearing protection can tend to
aggrivate you tinnitus. I don't know what it is called, but blocking out
outside sounds, the internal noise seems louder (no drowning out or masking
effect), I find wearing ear protection, I can only stand to do that for so
long. Maybe some else her can explain this phenominon.
