Mine started the same way

Janz -

Sorry to hear about your onset of tinnitus. Mine started the same way Dec.
27, 2000.

I can relate to the manic feeling and inability to sleep. When my ear
infection came on and the tinnitus kicked in I was in the same state. Sadly,
I must tell you that doctors (in general) are not skilled at tinnitus. They
can treat the symptoms (ear infection with antibiotics, sleeplessness with
other drugs, etc.) but they cannot "cure" the tinnitus.

You will probably spend numerous hours undergoing various tests, such as
MRI's to rule out other problems, hearing tests to document your level of
hearing and other such procedures. At the end of it all you may or may not
still have your tinnitus. I still have mine and honestly do not expect it to
go away.

What becomes important now for you is to adapt to the tinnitus. Since it is
new in your life, you will need to make some adjustments. Start with having
soft music or nature sounds (rainfall, seashore waves) play into your CD
player at night. Use earphones if it would be to distacting to others. Carry
earplugs with you to deal with loud noises. Be aware that certain drugs,
alcohol and foods can aggrevate the tinnitus.

This condition can be managed. Read Dr. Grossan's website and Dr. Nagler's
website. Join the American Tinnitus Association ($25 US). Search the
Internet, but be aware that most sites are there to make money and offer no
real cure. Just be wary and always check out the treatment method before you
invest your time and money.

Janz, you can get through this. The anxiety will soon pass. Stay in contact
with the varoius newsgroups, WWW Message Boards and other sites. You will
find that everyone cares and wants to help. As Tony Robbins (motivational
speaker) says -
"Now I am the voice" meaning you are that voice in your head, so take charge
of it. This condition WILL pass and you will regain control over your life.

Best wishes - John Hamilton
